At Placework, the design process is grounded in collaboration, exploration, and a shared commitment to creativity. Our approach is iterative, built on the understanding that great design emerges through dialogue, experimentation, and reflection.

Collaboration sits at the heart of how we work. We believe that design is most successful when informed by diverse perspectives—whether they come from professional designers, clients, or community stakeholders. Our process emphasizes listening and conversation as much as sketching and modeling. We often start by framing questions rather than jumping to solutions, allowing ideas to unfold through discussion. This approach builds a sense of shared authorship and ensures that every project reflects the values and insights of the whole team.

To reinforce this practice, we come together each week for a dedicated “Design Thinking” meeting, a space intentionally created to pause from production and focus on inquiry.

During these sessions, we collectively examine ongoing projects, brainstorm new ideas, and challenge assumptions. This ritual fosters an environment where every team member has a voice, and where curiosity is valued as much as expertise.

Exploration through models and visualizations is another cornerstone of our process. Physical models allow us to test spatial relationships and form in tangible ways, inviting hands-on engagement and discovery. Digital visualizations are effective ways to communicate materials, context, and the human experience at multiple scales. Whether through a quick sketch, a massing study, or a detailed rendering, these tools help us see possibilities and communicate ideas clearly—both within the team and with our clients.

To support this dynamic way of working, we use a range of collaboration tools, from traditional trace paper stuck to the wall to digital whiteboard platforms like Miro. These flexible spaces enable us to brainstorm, organize ideas, and visually connect thoughts in real time, whether we’re gathered around a table or collaborating remotely. The mix of analog and digital methods encourages playfulness while maintaining structure, making it easy to pivot between concept and critique. Quantitative analysis – assessing potential carbon or ecological impact, for intsance – is folded into the iterative process, often opening new opportunities for creativity.
