Activity and accessibility for a historic structure

Originally built in 1968, Somersworth’s iconic mid-century library is an architectural gem, but for decades has been inaccessible to the community. The upcoming renovation and addition will include a new lift, making all four levels accessible for the first time. The design re-imagines the original design to prioritize connection to the street and space for its robust community programming and children’s activities.

The two story addition aligns with the original split levels, and turns windows into doorways between the old and new parts of the building. The addition includes glazing treated with a frit to provide interior shading, serve as bird-safe glass, and also recollect the bird sculptures that grace the original entrance. The theme of nature is picked up in the children’s area with biophilic colors, wood tones, and woodland wall graphics.

Construction is anticipated to begin spring 2027.
