This thoughtful renovation transformed a simple Portsmouth bungalow into a bright and welcoming gathering spot for the owner’s extended family while preserving the architectural integrity of the original building. The design reveals an increasing connection to the backyard as one flows from the traditional front entry further into the heart of the open living space, culminating in a lantern-like sun porch that is fully engaged with the garden.

In addition to dramatic improvement to the energy performance, other updates included a second-floor laundry, two full baths, and enlargement of the bedrooms via a well-proportioned expansion of the rear dormer and opening up cathedral ceilings. Interior design by Frances S. Hodges Interiors.
